Citrix XenDesktop 7 VDA installation issue on Windows 2008 R2

Citrix XenDesktop 7 VDA

This will be a short article about an issue I ran into automating the Citrix XenDesktop 7 VDA installation.

As described on the Citrix edocs a silent install of the XenDesktop 7 VDA should be really straightforward. This is exactly what I was seeing when installing the VDA on Microsoft Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012.

XenDesktop 7 VDA installation issue

When I was working on Windows Server 2008 R2 the XenDesktopVdaSetup component fails and creates a logfile in the users AppData\Local\Temp\1\Citrix\XenDesktop Installer.

This is a small part of that logfile

===============================
11:36:28.3828 : XenDesktopSetup:This is a supported server OS.’
11:36:28.4139 : XenDesktopSetup:VerifyCDRoot: Media type not yet determined
11:36:28.6166 : XenDesktopSetup:Product with upgrade code {c05ce041-63db-4467-b777-9fcb30013ca2} is not installed.
11:36:28.6166 : XenDesktopSetup:This is not a supported VDA OS.’

The first thing to do is searching for a Citrix KB or support forum article but couldn’t find anything even close to this issue.

After a lot of digging around I found that when you run the XenDesktopVdaSetup it actually copies the files to C:\ProgramData\Citrix\XenDesktop Setup. I don’t know why this happens but that shouldn’t be giving us any problems. So I would think but just when I ran out of things to try to get the installer working I tried deleting the files. A bit amazed the problem was now fixed and I was able to run the XenDesktopVDASetup again.

I have reproduced this issue a couple of times and don’t really get why this happens but now we know how to fix it.

Let me know if this helped you or  when you know a different way to fix this issue. I guess Citrix will release an updated installer in some time. I will update the article when this happens.

    This helped me.. I was trying to install 7.9 VDA Agent on a 2008 R2 Server. I ended up running the VDA cleaner and it and once it rebooted a few times after it cleaned up. I deleted the “Citrix” directory in c:\progam files\”citrix” and c:\programdata\”citrix” Then i ran the “Autoselect.exe” from the XenApp 7.9 install Wizard and it worked.
